Ingredients
Scale
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- ½ teaspoon sugar optional
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 1 ¼ cup warm water 100 degrees or so, use a meat thermometer to test
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine the yeast, sugar, and salt.
- Pour in the warm water and whisk until dissolved.
- If using sugar, let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy; skip this step if not using sugar.
- Add flour to the mixture, stirring until it forms a sticky dough ball; adjust moisture with water or flour as needed.
- Cover the bowl with foil, plastic wrap, or a kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm area for 2-3 hours.
- Preheat the oven to 450 degrees, placing the Dutch Oven (with lid) on the lowest rack while heating.
- Allow the Dutch Oven to heat for 15-20 minutes once the oven reaches 450 degrees.
- Scrape the dough onto a piece of parchment paper, shaping it gently with flour.
- Optionally, cut a slit or design into the dough with a sharp knife.
- Carefully remove the Dutch Oven lid and place the parchment paper with the dough inside.
- Replace the lid and bake for 20 minutes; then remove the lid and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until golden brown.
- Take out the bread using the parchment edges and let it cool on a wire rack for about 20 minutes before slicing.
Notes
Ensure the water is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast properly.
Allowing the dough to rise in a warm environment improves the texture of the bread.
You can add herbs or garlic for an extra flavor boost.
