Ingredients
Scale
- 1½ pounds ground beef 80/20 blend is ideal
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 Tablespoon butter or oil
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 burger buns brioche or potato buns recommended
- 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter
- 8 ounces mushrooms sliced (cremini or button mushrooms work well)
- 1 small shallot or ½ onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1-2 teaspoons fresh thyme or ½ tsp dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add mushrooms and cook for 5 to 7 minutes until browned and softened. Add shallot or onion and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Stir in garlic, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook for another 2 minutes until fragrant. Keep warm.
- Mix ground beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into patties, slightly larger than the buns.
- Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat. Add butter or oil and cook burgers for 3 to 4 minutes on each side or until your desired doneness is reached.
- In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover to melt the cheese.
- While the burgers rest, lightly toast the buns cut-side down until golden.
- Spread mustard or mayo on the buns if desired. Place the cheesy burger patties on the bottom buns, top with the warm mushroom mixture, add extra toppings if you wish, and close the sandwiches.
Notes
Use fresh ground beef for the best flavor and texture.
Feel free to add your favorite toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, or pickles for some freshness.
To enhance umami flavor, consider adding a splash of soy sauce to the mushroom mixture.
